noticed so many similarities between Empire and Death Note

just like Lucious Lyon, L has to choose a successor
out of three candidates

Matt, just like Jamal, has already given up hopes of ever succeeding L,
because there are two other Wammy kids who rank higher than him on test scores,
he has convinced himself that he doesn't want the title and contented himself with games and watching the other two successors battle it out.
Friendly, complacent, easy going.

Mello, just like Hakeem, the snotty punk who has received preferential treatment for years
and loves being the center of attention, and really really wants to be L.
Likes wearing jewelry (like Hakeem) and is a wild one, impulsive, free spirited.
And just like Jamal and Hakeem, Matt and Mello are good friends, work together as a team,
while Matt (like Jamal does for Hakeem) always lets Mello have the limelight.

Near, like Andre, who would be the best successor for L, because he's the most qualified for it,
the most business savvy (like Andre), and is prepared to put the needs of others first.
He's the more serious one, the one you can depend on to do his job.
He also very much likes the prospect of succeeding L.
But he has been shut out by the other successors, despite his best efforts to get along with them.
He's antisocial, has questionable morals and has difficulty expressing emotion in a healthy way.

Light Yagami makes a fabulous Cookie Lyon! In canon, Light was the first to succeed L (even though L had not chosen him), so it makes sense that he'd be the "unwanted nuisance" that shows up suddenly in L's (Lucious Lyon's) life and screws up everything.
Devious, cunning, and sexy (like Cookie).

L, like Lucious, is more than a bit screwed in the head, a detached parent, and pushes "his" kids through hell and back, making them compete for the title of L.
He is unscrupulous (just like Lucious), will do anything to win, and has probably been through enough shit in his life to leave him cynical and jaded.
He's a good liar and he knows how to play the game.
At the same time, he has dreams and ideals, L believes in justice (like Lucious believes in the power of music), and he will work hard to find a suitable successor for (his empire) his detective work.
And (like Lucious) he does try to be a good (father) role model, he's just clueless how to do it.
